Storm cleanup continues in East Meadow

Posted

Hundreds in East Meadow and Salisbury remained without power on Monday afternoon following the mighty weekend storm that brought torrential downpours and tropical storm-like winds to the area.

LIPA officials said on Monday afternoon that power for most customers is expected to be restored later in the evening. However, without specifying where, for those experiencing "significant damage" may not be restored until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Though the power of 254,000 customers was affected by the storm, LIPA said about 194,000 had been restored as of 3:25 p.m. Monday. Additional crews had been sent in from other parts of the state to assist in restoration efforts on Long Island, LIPA said.

Tropical storm-like winds of around 50mph and rainfall totals of more than 2 inches were reported in surrounding areas over the weekend.

Crews from the East Meadow Fire Department, the Town of Hempstead, LIPA, National Grid, and private contractors have been out assisting with trees and power lines knocked down by the gusty winds.

According to a fire department official, there were about 60 calls in two days, more than half of them being storm-related.
