Volunteers brought comfort to the families of hospitalized children by preparing dinners

Nine congregants from Temple B’nai Torah dedicated their time, giving back to families facing difficult circumstances, as part of the congregation’s annual Mitzvah Day. B’nai Torah is located in Wantagh, and serves many members from East Meadow, Merrick, Bellmore, Seaford and other surrounding areas.

Volunteers traveled to the Ronald McDonald House associated with Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park on May 17, where they prepared, cooked and packaged 53 dinners for residents staying there while their children receive medical treatment. The meals provided comfort and support to families who are often far from home while caring for seriously ill children, Debbie Abrons, one of the volunteers, told the Herald in an email.

The project was made possible through generous donations from several local businesses, included Food Bazaar in Westbury, Stew Leonard’s of East Meadow, and Iavarone Brothers in Wantagh.

A Mitzvah Day is a Jewish-led day of faith-based social action, where often community volunteers of all ages and backgrounds come together to give their time in order to help others.

Participating volunteers included Debbie and Mitchell Abrons, Amy Neidle, Jennifer Rubinstein, Carol and Rob Meyerson, Elice Toscano, and Lauren and Howard Lev.

Volunteers worked together in the kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House, making a meaningful different in the lives of families navigating challenging times.

Temple B’Nai Torah’s annual Mitzvah Day encourages members to put the Jewish value of “tikkun olam” — repairing the world — into action through community service projects. This year’s effort at the Ronald McDonald House, volunteers shared, was a rewarding experience for all involved and provided much-appreciated support to families in need.
