Books and lunch

Come discuss the book Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng at a chat and lunch, moderated by Jane Shapiro, at the East Meadow Public Library on June 19 at 1 p.m. In Shaker Heights everything is planned. No one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Enter Mia Warren, an enigmatic artist and single mother who arrives with her daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this community. Little Fires Everywhere explores the weight of secrets and the ferocious pull of motherhood.

The importance of butterflies and bees

As part of a series on gardening presentations at the East Meadow farm, master gardeners and staff educations will teach guests the importance of pollinators like butterflies and bees. This presentation will take place on June 16 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and take you into the world of pollinators, explaining who they are, why they are important, what they do, why they are declining, and how to help them survive. The registration fee is $15.

Meditation at the library

The Library will be presenting an ongoing program on the art of Meditation. Sessions will be held on June 19 at 10 a.m. in the Community Room. The class will introduce the group to meditation and explain how it can improve the quality of our lives, by reducing stress, improving health, and looking at life in a different way. Classes to be held every Tuesday.
