East Rockaway Jr./Sr. High School students and staff recognized 988 Day on Sept. 8, joining the annual national effort to raise awareness about suicide prevention and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

School social worker Amy Weissman-Canale led activities aimed at reminding students about the support available to them at school and encouraging them to connect with trusted adults when they need help.

During lunch periods, students could stop by the school rotunda to meet members of East Rockaway’s student support team, ask questions and learn about mental health resources. Students also received materials with information about the 988 Lifeline, including stickers, magnets and keychains.

Students and staff wore blue and purple throughout the day in recognition of suicide prevention and mental health awareness.

The event emphasized the importance of reaching out for support and reminded students that adults and resources are available to help them through difficult situations.
