Following a day of golf across two Long Island courses, the Lynbrook Community Chest Mayor’s Golf Outing culminated in a sold-out cocktail hour and dinner. Along with raffles to further fundraising for the non-profit organization, the Community Chest and Chamber of Commerce also selected three local honorees to be recognized at the dinner.
In the nearly 25 years since the golf outing’s inception, Aug. 11, marked the biggest event yet, with 200 golfers playing at Inwood Country Club, located at 50 Peppe Dr. in Inwood, and The Seawane Club, located at 1300 Club Dr. in Hewlett.
This year’s honorees were commended for their various services to the Lynbrook community.
Paul Lynch, Superintendent of Schools for the Lynbrook School District, is continuing to give back to the district’s students since his appointment to the position in 2023. His current goals include further developing the “Profile of the Owl,” an initiative that identifies the life skills, qualities, and mindsets that will help Lynbrook graduates find success after leaving the nest.
Additionally, Lynbrook High School will be expanding its business classes beginning in September, and district-wide, mental health support is gaining a greater focus.
At the dinner, Lynch noted that he did not feel it was just himself being honored, but rather the district as a whole.
“We’re surrounded by the products of our school system, and that’s really my favorite part, is to see it all come to fruition.”
Cindy Schreiner’s Lynbrook roots run deep, with her family ancestry in the village dating back to the late 1800s. Continuing to live in Lynbrook her whole life, Schreiner has directed her philanthropic efforts toward the community while serving as Executive Committee member and Head of Operations, Transformation, and Key Strategic Partner Relationships at RBC Wealth Management - U.S.
Schreiner’s honoree status at this year’s dinner is historic–she is the first woman to be recognized for giving back to the community, especially with regard to the Community Chest.
“Giving back is a passion. When you see people that are in need and you know you can help, you should do it,” she said.
Johnny McGorey’s, located at 46 Atlantic Ave, is the brainchild of native Dubliners and business partners Dave Baker and Joanne Fountain. After opening their first location in Massapequa Park 26 years ago, Baker and Fountain aimed to create a new community staple in Lynbrook in 2023.
In the last 15 months, Johnny McGorey’s has hosted various local events for community members, and Baker and Fountain hope that their Irish pub will continue doing so for years to come.
Honorees and event organizers alike agreed that the most special part of the dinner was seeing Lynbrook residents, families, and alumni come together in such large numbers to benefit the Community Chest.
“When an organization like this has an event as successful as this, it really provides the opportunity to continue to expand and reach many families and maybe other organizations, too, that also deliver or know about people that we may not know,” village trustee Robert Boccio said.
Although the Community Chest collects donations throughout the year, village trustee AnnMarie Reardon emphasized that the Mayor’s Golf Outing is the largest and only official fundraiser the nonprofit holds. “The committee works very hard to make as much money as possible so that they don’t have to say no to anybody,” she shared.
The dinner signifies a collective commitment to help Lynbrook residents in need. “My heart is in this village,” Schreiner said.
