Lynbrook singer-songwriter David Kaid releases new original single Insomnia

Lynbrook native David Kaid is turning sleepless nights into music with the release of his newest original single, “Insomnia,” on Thursday, Oct. 22.

The singer-songwriter and actor, who graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in May, wrote and composed the upbeat, guitar-driven track after finding inspiration in his own struggles to fall asleep.

“I struggle with this sometimes and I'm unable to go to sleep and my mind is racing and I have so many thoughts,” Kaid said. “I had the idea to turn this frustration into something fun.”

The song began taking shape late one night as Kaid wrote down lyrics and experimented with melodies on his guitar. Rather than creating a slow, emotional ballad, he wanted the music to capture the restless energy of being unable to sleep.

Kaid wrote and composed the song himself, played most of the instruments and worked with his friend Logan Pollak on the recording.

Unlike his previous music, which he generally recorded with the help of studios, “Insomnia” gave Kaid an opportunity to take greater control of the creative process.

“I had a specific ear and everything I wanted in the song was intentional,” he said.

He also embraced small imperfections in the recording, something he said reflected lessons learned during his four years studying drama.

“Happy mistakes happened that I would usually have taken out,” Kaid said. “I learned to embrace that.”

Kaid, who previously released the original songs “Spellbound” and “More Than Friends,” said he hopes “Insomnia” will be part of a larger music project in the future.

For now, he is looking forward to sharing a different side of his artistry with listeners.

“It's a different sound compared to my other songs and I try not to limit myself on genres,” he said. “I hope everybody enjoys what I put out and continue to put out in the future.”
