East Rockaway resident Madeline Pearson was recognized for decades of community service at Assemblywoman Judy Griffin’s sixth annual Women of Distinction Ceremony on July 29 at Molloy University.
Pearson was among 18 women from across Assembly District 21 honored for their leadership, service and contributions to their communities.
A lifelong East Rockaway resident, Pearson has longstanding ties to both the Historical Society of East Rockaway and Lynbrook and the Girl Scouts. Her involvement in local history began while she was still in high school, when she volunteered at the East Rockaway Grist Mill Museum as a Girl Scout.
Pearson later became an early member of the organization that began as the Friends of the East Rockaway Grist Mill Museum and was recognized as a charter member in 1998. The group later merged with the Lynbrook Historical and Preservation Society to form the Historical Society of East Rockaway and Lynbrook. Pearson has served as its president and is now its executive director.
Through the historical society, Pearson helps organize programs aimed at preserving and sharing the communities’ history, including an annual program that introduces local fourth-graders to the history of Lynbrook and East Rockaway. The organization also hosts public presentations and participates in community events.
Pearson has remained active with the Girl Scouts of Nassau County for decades, continuing a connection that helped introduce her to community service and local history in the first place.
