Lynbrook High School hosted its 90th annual Class Night Skits on March 14. The event, which encourages friendly rivalry among the freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors, showcases their theatrical — and comedic — creativity.

The skits are just one event in a year-long series of competition, including Homecoming and athletic events, with points accumulated throughout the year.

“There are students elected to leadership positions, so they gain experience in making decisions and working under pressure,” Lynbrook High Principal Matthew Sarosy said.

“For most students, it’s about having fun while representing their grade. But regardless of who wins, there are a lot of great takeaways.”

The Class Night Skits, a tradition since the 1920s, also serve as a fundraiser for school activities. The proceeds from ticket sales are distributed among the classes, and help cover the costs of the prom and graduation.

“This is our oldest and most cherished tradition,” Sarosy said. “People’s grandparents have participated. People’s parents have been part of it, and it’s really a point of pride for the school.”

On the same night, East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School hosted its 89th annual Rock Rivalry, which reached a thrilling conclusion with the final event, called Entrance, which features original scripts, musical performances and elaborate stage productions.

Teachers Hugh Howard and Alycia Fahrenkrug oversaw the competition this year, which has evolved into a cornerstone of the high school’s culture. It spans several weeks, with events including Quiz Bowl, Sports Night, a volleyball match and mural creation.

Fahrenkrug said the fundraiser help cover end-of-the-year costs, such as prom and graduation.

A panel of alumni, including Ricky Quass, Tom Dwyer, Joe Vaglio, Emily D’Archaneglis, Lisa Rubino and John Turner, judges the event.

Rock Rivalry traces its roots back to 1936, when teacher Grace Rudiger founded it as a fundraiser for the athletics department. Over the decades, it has grown into a showcase of school spirit, teamwork and camaraderie, and continues to be a beloved tradition, bringing students, staff and the community together.
