Reading the summer away at Peninsula Public Library

Though vacationing is the activity that most people take part in during the summer, a close second is the reading program at Peninsula Public Library as 300 children signed up and 80 completed it and handed in their book logs, according to Children’s Librarian Carolynn Matulewicz at the end of summer party on Aug. 29.

After witnessing boats wash up on the front lawns of homes throughout the Five Towns and students from Lawrence High School forced out of their building and into Lawrence Middle School due to flooding from Hurricane Sandy, John Licata knew something had to change to prevent anything like that from ever happening again.

One Israel barbecue raises over $30K

The fourth annual One Israel Fund South Shore BBQ and Fine Israeli Wine Tasting at the Lawrence home of Karen and Michael Rosenbloom on Aug. 14 was attended by more than 175 people and raised more than $30,000.

Cooking up a whole lot of fun

SIBSPlace of South Nassau Communities Hospital held its annual barbecue on Aug. 11. The four-hour event that began at noon was at the Hewlett Harbor home of Mike Schamroth, one of the organization’s founders.

Inwood-based Five Towns Early Learning Center and Five Towns Community Chest in Woodmere joined together on July 29, as staff and board members of both civic organizations toured the refurbished premises of the Early Learning Center. The educational facility sustained severe damage during Hurricane Sandy.

Home-hosted barbecue raises $2,000

The Pot Luck Bar-b-que, held Aug. 2 raised over $2,000 for the Doris Vine Memorial Fund for Children at the Peninsula Counseling Center. The money collected will be used to assist children and families with children who are uninsured.

Splish splashing at Hillel’s water carnival

The inaugural Hillel Day Camp water carnival at the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway in Lawrence was a hit with the approximately 500 campers from toddlers to eighth-graders and counselors-in-training on Aug. 6.

Walk-a-thon raises $9,500 for soldiers

A Package from Home, an organization that sends care packages filled with essential items and letters of appreciation to “lone soldiers” in Israel, raised money by holding a walk-a-thon with approximately 100 participants at Sunny Atlantic Beach Club on July 30.
