Breaking ground on a new play area

The Lawrence School District aided by a $125,000 state grant with help from then Assemblyman Todd Kaminsky (D-Long Beach) broke ground on a new playground last month for the elementary school students that now attend the Broadway campus at the middle school.

Following an April 10 air test conducted at Lawrence High School by Olmstead Environmental Services of upstate Garrison, the building was deemed safe and concerns raised by teachers about were found to be accurate.

'On Broadway' — on Long Island

The Island Park Theatre Group, in conjunction with the Island Park Union Free School Recreation Department, presented “On Broadway - A Musical Revue” last weekend. A cast of 70 locals actors, dancers and singers entertained the audience at the Lincoln Orens Middle School in Island Park - and the IPTG broke records with its ticket sales.

Lawrence Woodmere Academy (LWA) students performed the play “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” on April 12 and 13. The musical is based on the movie of the same name. The story revolves around two con men that both get scammed.

Lawrence Woodmere Academy held a Holocaust Remembrance Day assembly on May 10 that commemorated the victims and survivors of the systematic killing of 6 million European Jews as well as 7 million other people under the Nazi Germany regime of the 1930s and ’40s.

Lawrence teachers gather baskets full of food

With $5 each from every teacher in the school district, the Lawrence Teachers Association collected $1,300 and used that money to purchase 40 turkeys, potatoes, stuffing, cans of vegetables, dinner rolls, bottles of apple juice and cans of cookies.

Women of Valor honored by Brandeis

Lawrence School District will get a $2.6 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that will cover 90 percent of the cost of building repairs to the high school, which was severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Career dreaming at Five Towns Early Learning Center

Summer’s end was celebrated at the Five Towns Early Learning Center Inwood on Aug. 29 with a barbecue and graduation of 11 children from the pre-k program who will be entering kindergarten this school year and 11 kids who graduated from the learning center’s early childhood program and will begin the pre-k program.
