At the governor’s news conference on May 13, our neighbors who did the hard work on this grant proposal were publicly recognized. And while the funding itself is cause for celebration, the behavior of our local Republican leadership surrounding the announcement reveals a troubling reality about its priorities. more
Under the current system, even when fuel prices spike, the county continues collecting a sales tax of 4.25 percent. There is no adjustment for an unusual, sustained price surge. The math is simple: The higher the price, the more the county collects in taxes, creating a windfall for the government. Residents, workers and small businesses shoulder this additional expense without receiving the benefit of readily available relief. more
For families waiting at bus stops, seniors trying to safely access parking lots, small businesses hoping customers could return, and emergency vehicles that depend on clear roads, this wasn’t an abstract issue. It was a quality-of-life issue. It was a safety issue. And it was a reminder that when we fail to invest in basic public-works infrastructure, residents are the ones who pay the price. more
Parents aren’t asking Albany to redefine parenthood or biological reality. They’re asking for relief from the crushing cost of living driven by high taxes and bad policy. At the same time, the $277 billion state budget is over $20 billion more than last year and $110 billion higher than when Democrats took control. One-party rule continues to ignore you. more
That institution, in any meaningful sense, is now gone. What has taken place over the past year is a cautionary tale about what happens when corporate fear meets political intimidation and what is lost when the two converge. When we heard that then new football coach Marcus Freeman would be speaking at a Notre Dame event at the Union League Club in Manhattan, we decided to attend and then go to dinner afterward. more
As a mom of two and as someone who works alongside Long Island families every day, I want to say plainly: This is a lot. Joy stacked on top of more joy, on top of logistics, on top of a full-time job and dinner and everything else — that’s not a celebration. That’s a stress response in a party hat. more
For too many entrepreneurs, opening or operating a small business here means dealing with local licensing fees that are far higher than what similar businesses pay in nearby counties. A legislative investigation revealed that Nassau County small businesses pay three to five times more for an annual license than comparable businesses in neighboring jurisdictions. more
In those two years I merged investigative reporting with environmental journalism, a combination that has been a journalistic and academic focus of mine for the past six decades. Life has its circles, and I was delighted that Alexcy Romero, superintendent of the national seashore and a 1990 graduate of SUNY Old Westbury, was a guest speaker at the school on Earth Day. As a professor at the university for 47 years, I taught investigative reporting and environmental journalism. more
Today the nurses of St. Joseph are negotiating a new contract with Catholic Health after working without one since March. We want the Long Island community to understand what we’re asking for and why it matters. We’re not asking for anything extraordinary. We’re asking for safe staffing, fair wages and the ability to continue providing the high-quality care our patients deserve. more
