Traditional goal-setting asks too much of willpower and too little of reality. It assumes that motivation is stable, that life will cooperate, and that change happens neatly within arbitrary timelines. Behavioral research consistently shows the opposite. Willpower fluctuates. Stress, fatigue and unexpected events derail even the most sincere intentions.

Attempting to reach a goal by wishing it into existence and sorting out the consequences later almost always leads to collateral damage. Planning today with affordability, reliability and long-term success in mind will ensure that today’s decisions don’t create tomorrow’s crisis. That’s the discipline New York should apply to its energy policy to prepare for success, not failure.

To date, more than 50 organizations and individual artists have indicated support for the grants academy concept. LIAA will continue to advocate for this resource at the county and state level. It is imperative to step up advocacy for Long Island arts, and essential for the LIAA to expand its influence in promoting the value of culture to the community.
