For many residents, this may seem like something that shouldn’t require government action. After all, mothers and fathers have been the foundation of families and communities since the beginning of our nation. Yet recent actions in Albany have made it clear that what once seemed self-evident can no longer be taken for granted.

Public participation is a cornerstone of good government. Residents deserve the opportunity to comment on matters before their elected representatives take action, particularly on issues that directly affect their communities. Limiting that opportunity diminishes transparency, reduces public trust and weakens the connection between government and the people it serves.

This award didn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of local advocacy, planning, partnership, and a shared belief that Valley Stream’s best days are still ahead. I was proud to stand with Gov. Kathy Hochul, Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages, Village Trustee Kevin Waszak, village business owners and residents when this transformational funding was announced.

Since property taxes fund a significant portion of local school district budgets, substantial state support is vital. School districts are continually facing rising costs, and school administrators work diligently to mitigate those costs to avoid burdening taxpayers. One of my top priorities this year was securing increased funding for our schools while reducing costs in order to bolster district budgets.

Although Joe Biden’s presidency is now very far in the rearview mirror, there are attempts being made by both sides to keep his name in the public arena. Republicans invoke Biden as a scapegoat for all of President Trump’s missteps, and former first lady Jill Biden wants to rewrite history after the very bad end to her husband’s term of office.

Unlike the overwhelming majority of countries that have been ruled by dictators and, in many cases, tyrants, the United States has always been a representative democracy, with the people having the final word in choosing our leaders. Having traveled to many countries during my time in Congress, including emerging democracies and countries liberated from Soviet domination, I’ve seen firsthand how much their people cherish the right to vote and being able to take part in the political process.

Many folks, from socialists down to the average working stiff, are outraged, claiming that no individual should have so much money. But you can count me in the camp, along with National Review’s Charles Cooke, that celebrates when an American can create a product that is so universally coveted that he or she earns unlimited money.

Nassau families already pay among the highest property taxes in the country. They pay more for groceries, insurance, utilities, child care and nearly everything else. Small businesses are being squeezed. Commuters are paying more to get to work. Seniors on fixed incomes are watching every receipt.

I have spent the vast majority of my career in public education, and I can tell you with certainty: The most important information I have ever received about what is happening in our schools hasn’t come from a spreadsheet. It has come from students sitting across a table from me, willing to tell me the truth.
