A candidates forum held by the Woodmere Republican Club on July 22 bore two surprises: one — that, according to event organizers, the first debate for the Republican congressional primary between District 4 candidates Frank Scaturro and Nassau County Legislator Francis Becker (6th District)) spontaneously played out before the crowd — an audience that swelled to the point of spilling out the door of the community room of the Hewlett-Woodmere Library.

Starting later this summer, there will be no more levers for Nassau County voters to pull: The OPTical scan electronic voting system, complete with a feature called the AutoMark, is set to be used in both September's primaries and the general election in November.

Residents, friends and family members are grieving over the loss of East Rockaway Mayor Edward Sieban, who died unexpectedly on July 3 after a brief stay at Winthrop University Hospital. Sieban was 49. The cause of death was acute pancreatitis.

A jurisdictional loophole will allow the Hewlett-Woodmere School District to carry out plans to transform wooded land adjacent to the historic Hewlett House into a parking lot — without seeking permits. A permit request, had it been sought, from the State Education Department to make changes to the land would have triggered an investigation by the state's Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation office.
