In the first of four town hall-style meetings on Nov. 7, Lawrence Middle School students were honored for their achievements inside and outside the classroom, and for exhibiting outstanding character with a focus on empathy, communication, appreciation and diversity.
Winners of the student government election were announced at the meeting. Students who didn’t win will serve as cabinet members.
Helping her school raise money will be the primary focus of her leadership as class treasurer, promised eighth-grader Alyssa Magliardo. “I want to thank everyone who voted for me, and I won’t let you down,” she said. “If you have questions or concerns, please see any one of us members. I look forward to working with everyone.”
There were nine winners of the Rock Card award — four in the seventh grade and five in the eighth grade — which honors students who perform a random act of kindness and exhibit good character. Seventh-grade winners were Enrique Cervantes, Elma Deljanin, Kaitlyn Jonas and Maverick Martinez. Eighth-grade winners were Naomi Diarhe, Nevaeh Baxter, Donovan Woolley, Christopher Mora and Alexia Charlton.
The KidWind science program, where students created wind turbines and presented their final projects at an Oct. 29 competition in Garden City, involved 18 students from the middle school. The students built wind turbines, which they used to turn wind energy into electric power, LMS Vice Principal Lisa DePaola said.

“I’d like to congratulate the STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts & Math) teachers and the students for all their hard work,” she said. “I’d especially like to congratulate our two student winners, David Monroy-Berganza and Donovan Woolley for a job well done, as they came in second place.”
The summer reading program winners were two seventh-graders, Bhawan Sandhu with 9,752 total pages read, and Lia Cohen with 4,329. The eighth-grade summer reading program winners were Zita Paz Lizama with 14,101 total pages read and Kalib DeNicolo with 11,677.
The next town hall meeting at LMS will be held on a Friday in February after the second marking, which ends on Jan. 30.
