Fire claims Atlantic Beach cabanas

Cabana fire at the Silver Point Beach Club brought many fire departments and firefighters from the South Shore of Nassau County. Before bringing this fire under control, fire departments from Inwood, Long Beach, Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Woodmere, Atlantic Beach Rescue, Meadowmere Park, Hewlett and Elmont were able to save many of the cabanas from further damage. Twenty-one cabanas were damaged. The fire is believed to be accidental.

Twenty-one cabanas at the Silver Point Beach Club in Atlantic Beach were destroyed in a fire that broke out late Thursday afternoon.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at the well-known beach club, at 2189 Atlantic Boulevard, just after 5 p.m. Thursday. The nearly two dozen cabanas that were destroyed were located in the Court No. 2 area of the facility.
The cause of the fire was unknown as of Friday, and is being investigated by the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office and Nassau County Police Department Arson/Bomb Squad.
Fire Department volunteers from Inwood, Lawrence/Cedarhurst, Woodmere and Meadowmere Park responded.
