Glee Club hums through the hallways

One of Lawrence High School’s newest and largest clubs has been causing quite a stir in the hallways. Lawrence’s Glee Club held their second annual showcase March 18.

While it was not their first performance this school year, as they also performed at the school pep rally in October and at the “Love Your Life” concert in February, the showcase is their biggest performance of the year. The performance included singing, dancing and live music, incorporating students from every single group in the music department. It included recent music and classics, with their selections ranging from Rihanna’s latest hit “Work” to Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love.”

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the group is that aside from support from music staff, it is entirely student run. Senior Marcel Frederic is president of the club, and Tamara Gonzalez is vice president. Junior Jessica Moreno is in charge of choreography, senior Serge Byakov is coordinator of music and lighting, and senior Natalie Azcona serves as treasurer.

Students from all grades were a part of the performance. Freshman Jacqueline Blyudoy joined not only to spend more time with her friends, but to exercise and improve her dance skills.

While the strenuous rehearsals were no easy task, Blyudoy is said she is excited to start preparations for next year’s showcase. Blyudoy said that she feels that the club is “like one big family,” and recalls that “In a time of need, everyone came together.”

Byakov also admits that the showcase is a massive and stressful undertaking, but said he enjoys every minute of it. He said that the fulfillment of finally seeing the completed show makes all of the hard work worth it.

Needless to say, the show was entertaining and unique, including a live accompaniment by the glee band for the song “Here” by Alessia Cara, a rap solo by senior Lydia Arroyo on Mackelmore’s song “Same Love,” an improvisational dance by junior Jessica Moreno to the song “Can’t Help Falling In Love” sung by senior Tamara Gonzalez, and even a dance by junior Sophia Claros to a recording of the poem “Phenomenal Woman” by Maya Angelou.

Lawrence High faculty and administration were so impressed by the performances of the Glee Club members that some of the musical numbers were done again for the whole school on March 22 during seventh and eighth periods.

Although the club has just recently begun their work at Lawrence, they are already a wonderful example of not only the excellence of our music department, but the ability of students from all the musical groups to join together and create something wonderful. They have put on impressive performance after impressive performance, and show no signs of slowing down. Congratulations to everyone in the Glee Club, we can’t wait to see what’s next!
