More than 7 inches of snow in the Five Towns

A powerful nor'easter whipped across Nassau County, and dumped up to 7 inches of snow on the South Shore and 4 to 8 on the North Shore. The snow, at times,was  mixed with light rain, that left a thin sheen of ice atop the white stuff.

Road conditions were better on main thoroughfares, worse on side streets.

More than 7 incles snow fell across the Five Towns, according to the National Weather Service as the winter storm that rolled in on Dec. 17 finally ended in the afternoon of Dec. 18.

In Cedarhurst, Mayor Benjamin Weinstock said that village crew began rolling at 6 p.m. last night as soon as there was two inches of snow. “We had crews working all night plowing and today they will be plowing and then salting again,” he said, adding that the snow is considered heavy or “heart attack” snow as it is compacted.

Weinstock said it snowed until 11 p.m. last night then rained to about 4 a.m.. There are eight plows, including three trucks with sanders that performed the work. He hopes that warmer temperatures in the next few days melts the snow and ice.

Lawrence Village Hall is open and plowing was ongoing. “We plowed, it was tough snow but we got through it,” Village Administrator Ron Goldman said. “With the made blowing back that’s what made plowing difficult and they had to make several runs.”

Atlantic Beah Mayor George Pappas said there that the roadsin the village had been cleared. Also the superintendent of Sanitary District 1 that picks up the rash and recyclables in the Five Towns and surrounding communities, did not collect on Dec. 17 because of the weather.

The Hewlett-Woodmere and Lawrence school districts were closed on Dec. 17, as well as the Five Towns Early Learning Center in Inwood; the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway in Cedarhurst and Lawrence; the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach in Woodmere;  the Hebrew Academy for Special Children in Woodmere; Mesivta Ateres Yaakov High School and Rambam Mesivta High School, both in Lawrence; Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls in Hewlett Bay Park; and Yeshiva Ketana in Inwood. Davis Renov Stahler High School for Boys in Woodmere is remote on Dec. 17. Lawrence will be all remote on Dec. 18.
