Hewlett High alum wins national radio award

Elissa Candiotti, a Hewlett High School alumna who graduated Syracuse University last year and now is a NBC Nightly News production assistant, was one of the winners of the Radio Television Digital News Association’s 2019 Student Edward R. Murrow awards. The awards, presented in five categories, recognize outstanding work by student journalists. She is also a former Herald intern.

Candiotti was recognized for excellence in audio reporting: SU Students Learn Life Lessons as They Help in Puerto Rico Recovery. She traveled with a group of Syracuse students to Puerto Rico, as the group volunteered to help residents recover from Hurricane Maria. She reported on this story for NCC News, the Newhouse School of Communications’ student news site.

“It’s an absolute honor to receive the student #MurrowAward in audio reporting for my time well spent in Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria,” Candiotti stated On Twitter. “This award is for those who have overcome the insurmountable - and remind us why journalism is of the utmost importance.”
