Liberty asks users to conserve water

With Long Island enduring an extended hot, dry stretch of weather, Liberty, which was formerly New York American Water, is asking residents to conserve water.

Liberty officials said that during these dry spells, the water infrastructure could struggle to keep up with demand as the utility battles to keep storage tanks full. “Keeping storage tanks fill is vital to the health and safety of our community as it ensures adequate supply and pressure when firefighters respond to emergencies,” Liberty officials stated in a news release.

Watering lawns places what Liberty called a “significant strain” on its water system. The utility urges customers to water every other day and not between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and use smart irrigation devices.

Minimizing irrigation could also help to improve a home’s water pressure, according to Liberty, adding that taking shorter showers or baths and detecting leaks in the home can also aid in conserving water.
