Memorial Day celebrated in the Five Towns

Five Towns residents commemorated Memorial Day on Sunday with the Inwood parade and a memorial service outside the John J. Oliveri Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1582 at the intersection of Doughty Boulevard and Mott Avenue. George Miller Sr. a 50-year member of the Inwood Fire Department served as grand marshal.

For the second consecutive year, rain washed out the Hewlett-Woodmere and Cedarhurst-Lawrence parades on Monday, Memorial Day. A service led by Lawrence-Cedarhurst VFW Post 339 was conducted at Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park.

The wet weather cancelled the appearance of Maya Wilon and Sophie Klein in the Hewlett-Woodmere parade. The fifth-graders sold lemonade for 50 cents a cup last month at the intersection of Centre Street and Walsh Avenue in Woodmere, and donated the $28.50 they earned to the Woodmere Fire Department.

“We wanted to make money for the fire department because they help us,” said Wilon, who will turn 11 on June 16. She said that her neighbors are members of the department. Wilon attends the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach in what was the Number Six School. Klein attends the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway.

“We were very, very proud that she spent a Sunday to give back to her community,” Tova Wilon said about the second of her four children. “She is setting a good example.”
