Mitzvah Mutts helps wayward dogs

Posted

At Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway (HAFTR) High School, students aren’t only engaging in chesed (kind acts) to help people; they are also performing chesed for animals. This year, the Mitzvah Mutts club has been more productive than ever in its goal to rescue dogs.

Mitzvah Mutts, led by Dr. Rena Bonne, is dedicated to rescuing pups. Bonne, head of the English department at HAFTR High has used her love of dogs to inspired students to become involved in the club designed to make a difference and a provide a happy life for the many dogs in need.

Students sponsored and participated in a bake sale and cookie auction in December to raise money for two rescue groups: Second Chance Rescue and Canine Collective. A couple of months later, in one of the biggest fundraising events in its history, the club raised $600 by selling T-shirts to students and teachers in school. The shirts imprints included the Mitzvah Mutts’ logo and the slogan “Bring them all home.” The money collected was distributed to various animal shelters and has already helped saved numerous dogs’ lives.

An adorable Labrador-pit bull mix named Jasper, about to be euthanized, was taken in by Dr. Bonne, who agreed to watch him for a couple of days. As a result of the group’s quick actions, Jasper was then neutered and adopted by a loving family in Manhattan.

The Mitzvah Mutts have also saved Lexy, Valentino, Jackson, Angie, Oreo, Woody, Ernie, and Dan. Presently, a cute five-month-old puppy named Redman is in need of a home and a family to love. He likes to be held, is curious, and aced his behavioral evaluation. Found as a stray, Redman is with the rescue group  Posh Pets awaiting a better life. He may be the perfect pup for you!

The impact Mitzvah Mutts has made in so many dogs’ lives is absolutely incredible. It has truly performed a huge mitzvah!
