An 80,000-square-foot Stop & Shop supermarket is expected to open at 253-01 Rockaway Blvd. in the Five Towns Shopping Center in October on the Nassau, Queens border, according to Stefanie Shuman, the external communications manager for the grocery store franchise.

“Stop & Shop will be relocating its store located at 603 Burnside Ave. in Inwood,” Shuman said, adding that construction is under way. “The relocated store is less than two miles away from the Inwood location and will feature expanded kosher, ethnic and produce sections, along with a kitchen that will offer freshly prepared foods.” The space was formerly occupied by Kmart.

Inwood Civic Association President David Hance said that the group had heard about the Inwood Shop & Stop in the shopping plaza known as the Burnside Commons being closed.

“Anytime any business leaves a community we are concerned about that,” he said. “I wish it weren’t happening. It’s a little less convenient for our residents. Hopefully, the landlord will attract a new tenant. It’s a busy shopping center. I’m always optimistic.”

Community members have heard rumors of which supermarket store could replace the Stop & Shop in Inwood, but it remains unclear what could happen with that space.
