Public comment sought on delisting of Inwood site

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is seeking public comment concerning the possibility of taking the property located at 525 to 535 Burnside Ave. in Inwood off its registry of hazardous sites.

Results of the remedial and post-remedial investigations conducted last year and this year, respectively, show that the site is no longer a threat to public health or the environment, according to the DEC.

Recent groundwater sampling detected trichloroethene and cis-1,2- dichloroethene “slightly exceeding Class GA Ambient groundwater standards,” the DEC stated in a prepared release.

Chloroethene is used to make polyvinylchloride (PVC) which is used to make several different plastic products such as pipes, wire and cable coatings and used for furniture, automotive upholstery and other parts, wall coverings, housewares and construction materials.

Public comments will be collected until Nov. 2. They can be sent to: John Sheehan, Project Manager, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Environmental Remediation, SUNY @ Stony Brook, 50 Circle Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790 or jcsheehan@gw.dec.state.ny.us or by phone at (631) 444-0240.

Should the DEC not receive any news or additional information during this public comment period that alters the delisting proposal, it will delist the site on or after Nov. 24.
