Running or walking in between the Sunday rain, the third annual Brandeis 5K Run/Walk took place outside the school on Frost Lane in Lawrence on June 12 as two Long Islanders and a Brooklyn resident finished in the top three spots.
Matt Girsch, 25, from East Meadow, claimed first place in 20:20.10. Brooklynite Leiba Reimler, 37, was the second person and first woman to cross the finish line. Her time was 20:23.54. Valley Stream resident Elana Shalomoff, 22, finished third with a time of 21:04.06.
Along with the outdoor athletic event, Brandeis hosted a brunch inside its building, which offered welcome relief from the bad weather.
Participants and family and friends appeared to take it in stride with umbrellas in hand as race time approached. The event is held in memory of Russell Friedman.
