SADD Fashion Show on Dec. 4

Posted

After a short Thanksgiving break full of feasting with family, students are back in school and finally feeling like it is autumn. The leaves have changed, and the weather may be slightly unpredictable, but certain things are constants on the calendar at Hewlett High School. Each year in late autumn, students look forward to the school’s musical, Winter I sports, and the Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Fashion Show.
The annual SADD Fashion Show is Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Hewlett High’s auditorium which is transformed into a runway. Students in the club choose a unique theme every year and are responsible for organizing the entirety of the event. The auditorium this year will be decorated for the theme SADD Under the Sea, as the club seeks to continue the trend of attracting many community members to the popular event.
To help ensure success, students reach out to local businesses for donations. Mixology in Hewlett donated clothes for girls, Morton’s Army & Navy Store in Cedarhurst and Mur-Lee’s Men’s & Boy’s Shop in Lynbrook donated clothes for boys to dress the models. Hair and makeup salons Cheveux and Bewitched, both in Woodmere, Aqua, Ambiance and Avanti, all in Hewlett, Amani in Lynbrook and Giorgio’s in Franklin Square donate their services to ready the models for their big night of walking down the runway. The club also encourages people to attend the show by offering raffle prizes which are donated by other local businesses.
New to this year’s fashion show, a local police officer will be a guest speaker to promote SADD’s mission to prevent destructive decisions and address the consequences of acts such as driving while intoxicated. The event is fun, but it is important to understand the severity of the problems SADD works to eradicate.
Students aim to create an overall experience that is highly professional, for members of the audience and those who help run the event. The skills used for obtaining donations, organizing and overseeing the fashion show could be applied in the future, whether the students are interested in business or modeling.
Members of the SADD Club definitely value this event and seniors are thankful for the opportunities it provided them.
“As a senior, and it being my last year in the club, both Jamie Gordon and I have tried making this show one of the best ones we have had,” Lindsey Reiter, a Hewlett High SADD co-president said. “The models have been working so hard and have been so good this year. I hope all of our hard work pays off at the show.”
