Hewlett Happenings

Springtime is a busy time for students

Posted

The birds are chirping, the sun is setting later each day, our allergies are itching, and Ralph’s is open. It is clearly springtime. April vacation came and went, and now Hewlett students are experiencing spring time fever.

The spring season at Hewlett High School marks a very hectic time of year. Students are tending to their activities, preparing for events, and studying for exams. One main event that many students, parents, and teachers look forward to each year is Cabaret Night. Many people gathered into the high school’s auditorium to enjoy either the 7 p.m. or 9 p.m. show on April 21. Filled with student-produced vocal, dance, comedy, and band performances, Cabaret Night is an annual event that raises money to help fight Pediatric Cancer. This year the show’s theme was “Once Upon a Cabaret.” Run by the Laura Rosenberg Foundation, the event is in memory of Laura Rosenberg, a Hewlett alum who died from the terrible disease in 1981. Many students and teachers put in an endless amount of time organizing the event, making it a huge success.

Another way Hewlett students know it is springtime is by the advent of the fourth marking period. It is exciting to think that the school year is almost over, but school at this time is certainly stressful. College Board Advanced Placement exams will take place from May 7-18, which means lots of studying. Teachers are crammed for time, trying to finish their comprehensive curricula while leaving time for review.

To compensate for the limited amount of time, various teachers will be hosting review sessions after school for these exams. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors enrolled in AP classes hope to score high enough on their tests to get college credit. Juniors are especially frenzied because the SAT and SAT II subject tests will be administered the first Saturday in May.

Spring also means college decisions. Seniors recently heard from the last of the colleges they applied to and now they must pick the school where they plan to attend for the next four years. The deadline is May 1 and many seniors have difficult decisions to make. Seniors who are in quandaries are weighing out the options by considering all the pros and cons. It will be an exciting day at the high school as students enter the building wearing their college apparel.

Activities and events are constantly occurring. Sports teams are practicing for their upcoming games and meets. Both boys and girls track and field team are looking forward to the Bulldog Invitational meet on Saturday, May 19 at the high school track where athletes from all over will compete. Other sports teams’ seasons will end in mid-May so they are working to end their seasons well.

The theater department is preparing for its production that will take place the first week in May. The spring concerts are also looming, which means musicians are diligently working to put on great performances as a way to showcase a year’s worth of effort, devotion, and development.

The spring season is a very exciting time of year. Honor societies will be holding their inductions ceremonies, including the National, Foreign Language, Business and Marketing Honor and Thespian honor societies. The societies have high standards so students who met the criteria made themselves and their families very proud. The ceremonies will be very happy, meaningful evenings as students receive their certificates and enjoy the praise they very much deserve.

As the end of the school year nears, it is hard not to get caught up spring fever. Although Hewlett students’ calendars are overwhelming, it is important to remember that everything will soon slow down, for summer will be here before we know it.
