Taking ‘brain breaks’ during finals week at Shulamith High School

Remaining focused on studying for finals was not easy as the more than a foot of snow that descended on Nassau County set back the Shulamith High School exam schedule by two days, school officials said.

Constant communication through email or postings in the school made it easier for students and teacher to keep on test review. There were tutoring sessions were run by teachers who were experts in a subject, but not the student’s usual teacher. “It was really helpful to talk over my notes with another English teacher,” said sophomore Sara Berger. “It really helped me to understand the material in a new way.”

On each day morning of final weeks there was prayer to help everyone maintain a calm manner and to focus on the exams. There was also “brain breaks” offered students a chance to de-stress and take their minds off their exams. Activities ranged from lip-syncing songs, learning about mindful eating, making slime and doing yoga.

The students, teachers and other faculty are now on break until Jan. 29.
