Writing a new Torah at Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre propels mitzvahs

Posted

Striving to observe all the commandants in the Torah, congregants of the Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre in East Rockaway participated in Mitzvah 613 on March 18, the project to write a new Torah scroll that will be read each week during services.

Zerach Greenfield, a Sofer (scribe) guided the project and demonstrated to adults and children how he used his quill to write God’s words. Congregants were able to share a connection to the letters being written, the parchment’s texture and Greenfield’s focus on this endeavor. In addition, the Jewish Centre will fulfill another mitzvah or good deed by donating its existing Torah scroll to an Israeli community in need.
