As education standards sink, we witness the rise of “influencers,” self-appointed experts who have co-opted the attention and expendable income of millions of people old enough to use a phone. This project began five years ago. After I retired from Congress in January 2021, I started to assemble my thoughts, news stories, photos and memorabilia from 28 years in office in an attempt to make some sense of, and put in some perspective, my experiences. The more I assembled, the more I realized how long and unlikely the journey had been — and how fortunate I had been.

It began with a simple but deliberate decision: to accept and respect our differences and to embrace the discomfort of unfamiliarity. Nearly 300,000 regulations drive up the cost of housing, energy and doing business. One New Yorker leaves the state every 2 minutes and 23 seconds. Those aren’t just statistics — they’re a signal that the American Dream is no longer affordable here due to Albany’s failed leadership.

Sentiment matters, because it drives spending, hiring and investment decisions. When consumers and business leaders feel downbeat, they may pull back — even in a relatively solid economy.

We aren’t simply living through an era of political lying. A lie still needs something real to distort. What we are seeing now is something more corrosive: language engineered so that it no longer answers to reality at all.

The time for flip-flops, delays and partisan posturing is over. The families of Nassau County deserve a government that works as hard as they do. We’re done waiting for the majority to rediscover its 2022 backbone. We are focused on the politics of results, and we won’t stop until the gas tax cap holiday is a reality for every driver in this county.
