Annual Freeport Canoe Races

Residents gearing up for annual Great Freeport Canoe Races, Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023, at 10 a .m. at Cow Meadow Park, 701 S. Main St. in Freeport

The event is all fun and games with a splash of competition as competitors take to two-person canoes and race around buoys for medals and bragging rights. So, whether you’re an experienced canoeist or just looking for a little exercise and fun on the water, this annual event delivers.

“It really is all in fun,” says Marianne Endo, coordinator of the event that is co-sponsored by the Freeport Chamber of Commerce, the Village of Freeport and the Freeport Police Athletic League. “We provide the canoes, the life jackets and the paddles.”

Each two-person canoe costs $40 and registration goes to support the PAL and other activities and organizations around the Village of Freeport. While first- through third-place winners get medals, everyone gets a T-shirt. Don’t worry if you are a canoeing novice, everyone gets a modicum of instruction before setting out, and there will be ample safety personnel on the water for those who stray from the path or even need a little help back to shore. Registration will be available the day of the races, and racing will continue until all competitors have taken part in at least one race.

“The races are all about promoting the water and having a good time,” Endo added. “I just tell folks to bring their beach chairs and snacks and enjoy the day.

Only cash or checks are accepted for registration, but registration will still be accepted after racing begins. For more information, call 516-223-8840.
