'Spooktacular' car show hosted by Freeport Fire Department

The Freeport Fire Department raised funds for the department through its Spooktacular Haunted Car Show at the Broadway firehouse. The event, which was organized in partnership with Exit Events, gave locals a chance to showcase their rides and have some Halloween-themed fun.

The car show was hosted on Oct. 18 in the large parking lot of Hose Company Number 2 of the Freeport Fire Department. This was the second car show the department has hosted this year, with the previous one being held in August at the same location.

Despite its ghastly theme and spooky branding, the car show was a family-friendly event that went beyond showcasing cars and motorcycles. Some of the highlights included a two-step exhaust competition to have cars show off their engine sounds, an exhaust flame competition and low car limbo.

Food vendors, music and giveaways were also large parts of the event, as Exit Events sponsors got to showcase their products to interested car collectors and those who are a fan of the industry.

Children who attended also got to start their candy collecting early this year by participating in a trunk or treat activity at the event.

Freeport’s Mayor Robert T. Kennedy voiced his support for the event and the fundraising effort.

"It was a really great event and well attended," he said. "There were more than 150 vehicles there. …I also am pleased that the community came out to support the fire department and our firefighters.”

Exit Events announced on Facebook that this was its last major event of the year. The Freeport Fire Department, which is comprised of volunteer firefighters, was not done with its social activities, however. The department hosted its 37th Fire Expo the following week on Oct. 25 during the Freeport Fall Festival.
