Following longtime principal Lorraine Smyth’s transition to a district leadership role, the Hewlett-Woodmere school district has named Nicole Montellese as the next principal of Franklin Early Childhood Center.

Montellese began her 11-year career in the district as a teacher at Franklin. After some time away from the building, she now returns to lead the school where her journey began.

“Returning to the school where my Hewlett-Woodmere journey began is more than a homecoming — it’s a full-circle moment filled with purpose and hope,” she wrote. “Franklin Early Childhood Center holds a special place in my heart, and I am committed to fostering a nurturing, inclusive environment where every child feels seen, supported, and empowered to reach their highest potential. I look forward to continuing my partnership with our administrative team, dedicated staff, and Franklin families as we embark on this journey together.”

She officially replaces Smyth, who was appointed assistant superintendent for human resources and leadership development on June 27, after serving as Franklin’s principal since 2013.

Montellese was appointed and sworn into the position during a special Board of Education meeting on Aug. 4.

Most recently, she served as the p-12 chairperson for the departments of world languages and English as a new language. From 2013 to 2022, she worked at Franklin as a reading teacher assistant, first-grade teacher, and ENL co-teacher.

Superintendent Dina Anzalone said Montellese emerged as the right choice for the job.

“Among a highly accomplished and talented pool of candidates, Dr. Montellese stood out as the exceptional leader Franklin Early Childhood Center needs to flourish in the years ahead,” She wrote. “Having worked closely with Dr. Montellese as our P-12 Chairperson for World Languages and English as a New Language, I’ve witnessed firsthand the extraordinary time and dedication she brings to everything she touches. Her deep roots at Franklin; from first grade teacher to ENL co-teacher to technology integration lead teacher, demonstrate her unwavering commitment to our students, families, and staff.”

Before joining Hewlett-Woodmere, Montellese served as head teacher at the Clarkstown Central School District Childcare and Early Learning Program for two years.

She has shared her expertise at several educational and technology events across Long Island, including the Molloy University Make Math Count Conference, the Asset Technology Conference, and the LIASCD Conference.

“Her innovative leadership, collaborative spirit, and relentless pursuit of academic excellence have made a difference for students” Anzalone added. “I know she will bring that same passion and vision to Franklin, ensuring it continues to thrive as the nurturing and dynamic learning environment our youngest students deserve.”
