The Performing Arts Center at Freeport High School buzzed with excitement as students, administrators, and staff gathered for the school’s much-anticipated annual Hispanic Heritage Assembly. The event, which showcased the rich tapestry of Hispanic cultures, commenced with enlightening remarks from Freeport High School Principal Gisselle Campbell-Ham and Assistant Principal Aaron Johnson, who emphasized the significance of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The Freeport High School Culture Club took center stage, captivating the audience with a compelling slideshow that delved into the diverse traditions and histories of various Hispanic countries. Their engaging presentation shed light on the importance of celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and fostering cultural appreciation.

Adding a touch of distinction to this year’s celebration, Deputy Speaker of the New York State Assembly, Phil Ramos, graced the event as the keynote speaker. Ramos shared insightful perspectives on the profound influence of Hispanic culture in America, encouraging students to take pride in their heritage. His empowering words resonated throughout the assembly, inspiring a sense of cultural pride and unity among the attendees.

“We have to work together, help each other, network with each other, lift ourselves up and educate ourselves,” Ramos said. “Throughout history, that is the only thing that will help us. It is your education that will lead you to that success.”

The assembly concluded with a performance from the high school band, A Touch of Brass, who performed the Latin song, “Señor Salsa,” by John Wasson.
