With the goal of raising funds for various marine and beach conservation organizations on Long Island, Adam Nussen, Freeport resident and Jones Beach lifeguard, accomplished a feat never seen before. The community, along with Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé celebrated Nussen circumnavigating Long Island by prone paddling. He completed the 300-mile journey in just 12 days.
Prone paddling is done face-down or kneeling on a board while the paddler uses only their arms to propel themselves in the water rather than oar or any other external equipment. Nussen began his journey on May 26. Upon returning back to Freeport on Friday, June 5, Mulé presented him with a Nassau County Legislature Citation in recognition for his remarkable work.
“As if Adam’s commitment to helping others wasn’t already evident through his work at Jones Beach, he simply outdid himself by prone paddling around the entirety of Long Island to raise money for deserving charities and increase awareness about the preservation of our precious waterways,” Mulé said. “It was such a thrill to join his friends and family as they welcomed him home—congratulations on a job well done and thank you to the Freeport Police and Fire Departments for providing a much-deserved escort to shore!”
