Over 100 miles of Long Island roadways have completed construction after $31.5 million was invested by New York state officials for improving several key roads. The impacted roads include State Route 25, the Sunrise Highway, service roads in Suffolk County, the Hempstead Turnpike and Front Street in the Village of Hempstead.
“Long Island’s roads are essential to our economy and quality of life, connecting families to their communities, workers to their jobs and visitors to destinations,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. “These projects exemplify our commitment to making the infrastructure and public safety investments needed to keep New Yorkers moving and ensure our transportation system meets the needs of our communities.”
The $31.5 million invested in Long Island is a part of $600 million used by the New York State Department of Transportation across 180 paving projects statewide this year. The Department of Transportation claims this year’s projects represent the “most ambitious annual road resurfacing agenda” ever planned and executed by the department.
Several local officials commented on the project’s completion.
“By paving the roads and implementing safety enhancements, such as upgrading curb ramps, we are creating accessible crosswalks that allow everyone to navigate their communities with confidence,” State Senator Siela Bynoe stated.
State Assemblyman Noah Burroughs also applauded the investment, stating, “I extend my gratitude to Governor Hochul for recognizing the need and the hardworking union workers on the completion of this project.”
Other road reconstruction projects continue to progress in and around the Village of Freeport and the Hamlet of Roosevelt, as state and local officials across party lines seek to improve community infrastructure.
