Freeport school bus crash leaves several injured

At a little after 3 p.m. at the intersection of Merrick Road and  South Long Beach Avenue, a passenger vehicle collided in the back of a school bus. No deaths have been reported. 

According to bystanders, a gray sedan was speeding down South Long Beach Avenue while a school bus traveling down Merrick Road was making a left turn. The driver of the sedan failed to avoid the school bus, leading to the car being squashed underneath one of the bus' rear wheels. 

Freeport police and other first responders arrived at the scene of the accident and were able to get the sedan out from underneath the bus. Bystanders also told the Herald that the driver was freed by emergency services using the Jaws of Life tool to open up the car. 

A representative of the Freeport Police Department said that the no one was killed by the accident and only minor injuries have occurred to the drivers and passengers involved. 

The crash remains under investigation.
