The Rockville Centre Education Foundation’s 2025 Gala, held on April 26, saw a crowd of nearly 150 supporters to fundraise for the organization and celebrate the of two honorees: Lisa Umansky and Melissa Rice. The successful evening raised over $50,000 and highlighted the honorees’ significant roles in advancing local business and education in Rockville Centre. Both women were praised for their leadership, innovation and service, which have positively impacted countless lives in the area.
Lisa Umansky, owner of Polka Dot Pound Cake and a former president of the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce, has championed local businesses and supported educational initiatives for years. From showcasing student musicians at her bakery to actively supporting the South Side High School drama program, Umansky has bridged the worlds of commerce and education. Her entrepreneurial journey, beginning at local farmers’ markets and culminating in a thriving bakery and café, reflects her resilience and dedication, particularly in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which inspired her to open a brick-and-mortar shop.
Melissa Rice, a longtime teacher at Floyd B. Watson Elementary School, received the 2025 Ruth Fins Award for her exceptional contributions to education. With a 23-year teaching career, Rice has inspired hundreds of students through creative, grant-funded classroom experiences that foster curiosity and innovation. Known for her deep emotional investment in her work, Rice told the Herald she views teaching not just as a profession, but as a calling. Her role as an educator, community member and parent showcases a life devoted to nurturing learning and growth in Rockville Centre.
The women were presented with crystal glasses that were etched by the South Side High School Wood Design Club.
Other highlights of the evening included cocktail hour entertainment by the South Side High School Jazz band, South Side High student photographers capturing the evening in photographs and national honor society students providing technology help with the online fundraising platform.
