Under blooming spring skies and surrounded by a renewed sense of civic pride, the Glen Cove Beautification & Litter Prevention Program is preparing to host its annual Garden Party fundraiser on May 14 at The Metropolitan — an event organizers say is about far more than flowers and fundraising.
This year’s event will support the construction of a new gazebo in Pratt Park dedicated to Glen Cove’s first responders, while also helping the organization continue its broader beautification efforts throughout the city.
“Our Garden Party fundraiser is more than a lovely evening out — it is an opportunity for our community to come together and help create something truly meaningful for Glen Cove,” said Lora Cusumano, chairperson of the Glen Cove Beautification Commission and president of the Glen Cove Beautification Litter Prevention Program. “We are proud to be raising funds for a new gazebo in Pratt Park dedicated to our First Responders while continuing our mission to beautify and enhance the public spaces we all share.”
The fundraiser, scheduled from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Metropolitan on Pratt Boulevard, marks a strategic shift for the organization, which previously held its annual fundraiser in the fall. Barbara Peebles, vice president of the Beautification & Litter Prevention Program, said organizers felt spring better reflected the organization’s mission.
“The colors are coming out now,” Peebles said. “We felt like beautification is better in the spring.” She added that the move was also intended to increase community awareness and engagement at a time when public gardens and landscaping are beginning to flourish throughout the city.
Peebles emphasized that while fundraising is important, the organization hopes the event also inspires residents of all ages to get involved in volunteer efforts year-round.
“It’s really to raise awareness and get people more involved,” she said. “Anyone of any age can get involved.” Volunteers contribute in many ways, from painting projects and beach cleanups to planting and maintaining public spaces.
The planned gazebo has quickly become a centerpiece of excitement surrounding the event. According to Peebles, online response to renderings and concept images has exceeded expectations, particularly because the structure will honor Glen Cove’s first responders.
“We are so proud to donate a beautiful gazebo to the city, and dedicate it to our amazing first responders in recognition of their service, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to our community,” Peebles said.
Organizers are currently working with city officials, including the Department of Public Works, Parks and Recreation Department, Building Department and mayor’s office, to finalize the gazebo’s size and exact placement in Pratt Park, located near the Glen Cove Fire Department, EMS services and Harbor Patrol.
“We’re really showcasing our effort at Pratt Park because it’s a wonderful little park, and this will really enhance it,” Peebles said.
The structure is expected to cost roughly $15,000 and may measure approximately 16 by 14 feet, depending on final approvals and fundraising totals. Peebles said organizers hope to have the gazebo completed in time for a Fourth of July weekend dedication ceremony already included in the city’s event planning.
Councilman Mike Ktistakis, liaison to the Beautification Commission, said the gazebo reflects the organization’s larger vision of community investment and civic pride.
“The way I see it is that community beauty is like a reflection of the care its residents have for one another,” Ktistakis said. “This fundraiser isn’t really just another fresh coat of paint on a building or new greenery. It’s about reclaiming our public spaces and creating a neighborhood where we’re all proud to call home.”
Ktistakis noted that the Beautification Commission has expanded significantly over the last several years, pointing to projects including a new scholarship for Glen Cove High School seniors pursuing environmental studies or community beautification initiatives.
“The committee doesn’t sleep,” he said. “It’s really an endless body of love and passion.”
He added that the gazebo is intended to serve as both a gathering place and memorial space, particularly during events such as Glen Cove’s annual Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony.
“We’re planting the seeds for a more vibrant, sustainable tomorrow,” Ktistakis said.
Tickets for the Garden Party are $95 and include appetizers, beer, wine, soft drinks, coffee and dessert. Sponsorships and gift basket donations are also being accepted.
