For more than two decades, the Glen Cove SAGE Foundation has helped provide additional financial support for programs serving older adults in Glen Cove and surrounding North Shore communities.SAGE, which stands for Senior Activity Generational Endowment, works alongside the Glen Cove Senior Center to raise private funds for programs and services that are not fully covered by government funding. The foundation supports services ranging from health and wellness activities to programs for seniors with cognitive and physical challenges.
How did SAGE get started?
The Glen Cove SAGE Foundation was established in 2005 by former Glen Cove Mayor Vincent “Jimmy” Suozzi. The goal was to establish a private nonprofit organization that could raise money for the Glen Cove Senior Center beyond the government funding it receives.
Former SAGE President Rhoda Finer, former Senior Center Director Carol Waldman, Patti Yeomans and Mike Bono helped bring the organization to fruition.
Where does the money go?
SAGE says 100 percent of the money it raises is used to support the Glen Cove Senior Center.
That funding has helped pay for social work services, lifelong-learning programs, brain-fitness activities and art, dance and music therapy. SAGE funding has also supported exercise and wellness activities such as tai chi and chair yoga, as well as equipment, entertainment and improvements to the Senior Center.
The additional funding supplements support the center receives from the City of Glen Cove and federal, state and county sources.
The Senior Center, at 130 Glen St., currently serves approximately 1,600 members and provides about 25,000 meals annually. Its programs are available to adults 60 and older, including residents of Glen Cove and surrounding communities.
SAGE supports local seniors
SAGE raises money through individual donations, grants and other fundraising efforts, allowing the foundation to help pay for services that might otherwise fall outside the Senior Center’s regular budget.
Its support extends beyond recreational activities. SAGE helps fund programs designed to address the physical, social and emotional needs of older adults and provides resources for seniors who require additional assistance.
The foundation also supports the Senior Center’s Adult Day Program, which serves older adults with cognitive and physical challenges while providing respite and resources for caregivers and families.
Through its partnership with the Senior Center, SAGE helps expand programs and services.
