Congressman Tom Suozzi won the Democratic primary for New York's 3rd Congressional District on Tuesday, defeating challenger Danielle Welch in a commanding victory and securing his party's nomination for the November general election.
With most votes counted, Suozzi received roughly 81 percent of the vote, handily defeating Welch, a Queens public defender making her first bid for federal office.
The result positions Suozzi to seek another term representing a district that includes much of Nassau County's North Shore and portions of northeastern Queens.
In a statement released following the victory, Suozzi thanked voters and said he would continue focusing on lowering costs and pursuing bipartisan solutions.
“I am devoted to public service and am grateful for this result,” Suozzi said. “Right now, I am fighting every day to lower costs, make health care more affordable, protect Medicare and Medicaid, and stand up to the White House's reckless tariffs and costly wars.”
He added that the country's challenges are “too important for partisan games” and called for Democrats and Republicans to work together on what he described as common-sense solutions.
Suozzi, a former Glen Cove mayor and Nassau County executive, returned to Congress in 2024 after winning a special election to replace former Rep. George Santos. He later won a full term and has made affordability, public safety and federal investment in local communities central themes of his tenure.
Welch campaigned on expanding health care access, strengthening labor protections and advancing progressive priorities. Despite the lopsided result, her campaign marked the first Democratic primary challenge to Suozzi since his return to Congress.
