The Glen Cove City School District is starting the new school year with changes aimed at increasing community involvement, gathering feedback on its future and adapting to changes at the state level. Here are three things residents should know.
Monthly community forums are coming to the district
The Board of Education will now hold its regular meetings once a month, while the district adds monthly community forums designed to encourage more conversation between residents and administrators.
Superintendent Alexa Doeschner announced the change Sept. 2, saying the forums were created in response to community feedback. Unlike formal board business meetings, the gatherings will include a presentation followed by questions and discussion.
AI will help gather community feedback
The district has launched ThoughtExchange, an artificial intelligence-powered platform that will collect community input as officials develop Glen Cove’s next strategic plan.
The platform opened Sept. 3 and will remain available through the end of September. Residents can submit their own ideas and rate thoughts submitted by others on a scale of one to five.
Doeschner said the feedback will help determine district priorities for the next three to five years.
Student representatives are also working with the board to encourage students to participate, ensuring their experiences and priorities are included in the planning process.
The district is adapting to a new Regents exam
Trustees approved an amendment to the district’s Annual Professional Performance Review plan for 2026-27 reflecting New York state’s transition from the Living Environment Regents exam to the Life Science: Biology Regents.
The newer exam, introduced in 2025, is part of the state’s shift toward updated science standards.
Its initial rollout drew criticism from some parents and students, with concerns focusing in part on the exam’s heavier emphasis on reading and interpreting information compared with the former Living Environment test. The amendment was approved for the 2026-27 school year.
