It won’t be enough for Blakeman to simply bash New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani or the dangers associated with the Democratic Socialist platform. Blakeman needs something bold to set him apart, and to give state residents something to vote for. more
The problem is the legislation’s time-limit loophole. In 1972, when both the House of Representatives and the Senate had passed the ERA, it faced a deadline imposed by Congress for the required ratification by the states — first seven years, then extended to 10 years. By the end of that decade, 35 states had approved the amendment, just three states short of what was needed. more
As the effects of PFAS, the so-called “forever chemicals,” become the focus of discussions across the United States — on Long Island because of their impacts on the underground water table, our sole source of potable water — New York state’s attorney general is suing corporations involved with PFAS for allegedly violating a number of state laws. more
On Long Island, $1 million can buy a perfectly ordinary home. In Nassau County, the median home price is now around $880,000, and in Suffolk County, it’s roughly $750,000, both near historic highs. In communities where demand remains strong and inventory remains tight, a $1 million price tag is no longer an indication that someone is purchasing a sprawling estate. Technology and artificial intelligence are changing the world around us remarkably fast. The students in our classrooms today are preparing to enter a world that will look very different from the one in which many of us grew up. As educators, we have a responsibility to stay informed and prepare our students to navigate this rapidly changing world with confidence, curiosity and good judgment. Whether it’s the war in Iran, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, China’s expansionism or the continuing threat of Islamist terrorism, the United States and the world are faced with crises from multiple directions. This should be a time when nations with common values and interests forge a united front, no matter our policy differences or personality clashes. more
Teaching sports management, I find a lot of motivation in working with students who are going to be the future leaders in this growing industry. But have I felt joy? Not really. To see your favorite teams lose year after year — and my teams seemed to lose a lot of painful games — sapped the joy out of being a fan. I’ve always felt like an outsider in the world of fandom, jealous of others around the country whose teams achieved their ultimate goal. We’re New York fans, for God’s sake. We deserved better! more
But 25 years later, the challenge for all of us is the same: How do we remember Sept. 11 in a meaningful way, and how do we help those who continue to live with its consequences? more
Sadly, these cases mark the last traces of the Justice Department’s vast investigation into the Capitol attack. Worse yet, it’s still possible that any number of the Jan. 6 participants may benefit financially from their involvement. That’s thanks to the $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” created to compensate Americans who were unfairly targeted by federal law enforcement and prosecutorial actions during prior administrations. Those prosecuted as part of the investigation into the insurrection were clearly intended to be among those in line to benefit from the fund. more
