Nassau County police are investigating two fatal stabbing incidents that occurred in Island Park and Valley Stream between April 30 and May 1, according to the department’s Homicide Squad.
Police said one suspect is currently in custody in connection with both incidents. The suspect was reportedly arrested by the Lynbrook Police Department in front of a 7-Eleven on Atlantic Avenue in Lynbrook. When the Herald contacted the store, the owner—who identified himself only as Mr. Patel—confirmed that a person was taken into custody on the sidewalk in front of the store early Friday morning.
According to detectives, the first incident occurred at 12:27 a.m. on May 1, when Fourth Precinct officers responded to a 911 call at a Wendy’s on Austin Boulevard in North Long Beach. Upon arrival, officers found a 42-year-old woman who had been stabbed outside the restaurant. She was pronounced dead at the scene by a Nassau County police medic.
The second incident took place at approximately 3:13 a.m., when Fifth Precinct officers responded to a request from the Lynbrook Police Department for a welfare check at a residence on West Mineola Avenue in Valley Stream. Inside the home, officers discovered a 32-year-old woman who had also been stabbed. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police identified the suspect as Rony Yahir Alvarenga Rivera, 22, of 90 West Mineola Avenue in Valley Stream. Detectives said he was located by the Lynbrook Police Department and arrested without incident following a thorough investigation.
Rivera has been charged with first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder. He was arraigned May 2 at First District Court in Hempstead.
The investigation remains ongoing.
