Major renovations and improvements are coming to Lido Golf Club resulting in a decrease in greens fees, according to Town of Hempstead Supervisor John Ferretti.
Lido Golf Club is "one of the crown jewels of the Town of Hempstead" according to Ferretti, which is why the Hempstead Town Board will be implementing major upgrades to the course.
In 1942, The United States Navy acquired the property during World War II to construct a naval base. After the war in 1953, the course re-opened and was designed by golf course architect Robert Trent Jones. With waterfront views, challenging layout and distinctive seaside character, the course has been a staple of the Town of Hempstead for many years.
Ferretti and other Town Board members, including Town Clerk Kate Murray and Commissioner of Parks and Recreation William Hawkins, spoke at Lido Golf Club on June 11 to announce the upcoming renovations and an associated discount on greens fees.
The first phase of the project will affect nine holes throughout the course to improve playability, turf health and overall course conditions. “Temporary greens will be in effect on two of the nine holes, and shared greens will be in effect on the other seven,” Ferretti said. This allows for continuous play with no interruptions while the upgrades are completed. No timeline for the project was discussed.
“These improvements demonstrate our commitment to preserving and enhancing this remarkable course while keeping it affordable and accessible to the public,” Ferretti said.
Due to the potential disruption, greens fees will be reduced by 50 percent to encourage golfers to play the course during renovations. “We believe that when the course benefits, golfers should benefit as well,” said Ferretti.
The improvements will include an increase in the number of groundskeepers dedicated to maintaining the course. Pest control will be expanded to better protect the health of the grounds and there will be major irrigation system improvements to promote healthier greens and fairways.
“This is about preserving a beloved public asset and supporting recreation for years to come,” Ferretti said. “Our goal is simple: provide the best possible golf experience while keeping Lido Golf Course affordable, accessible and enjoyable. We appreciate all town golfers who will continue to golf here at Lido Golf."
