The Town of Hempstead celebrated America’s 250th birthday with its annual concert and fireworks spectacular on June 27. The day began with scattered rain and threatened to force a last-minute reschedule, but the weather shifted to a clear, enjoyable afternoon and evening.
Attendees took in the belly-stretching spectacle of the Sabrett hot dog eating contest and the intricately detailed sandcastle-building contest. Music was provided by The Red, White, and Blues Band as well as The Jacksons — featuring original members of The Jackson 5, brothers Jackie and Marlon. Food trucks, family activities and a volleyball tournament rounded out the fun.
105-year-old World War II veteran Dominick Critelli performed his rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” on the saxophone. Critelli’s service segued into a key feature of the day — the presentation of Veterans Service Awards to four local veterans — Jim Brzezinski of Levittown, Billy DePietro of Elmont, Marianela Lizana-Plaza of Valley Stream and Charles Wroblewski of Seaford. Town of Hempstead Supervisor John Ferretti presented each veteran with a plaque to recognize their service and assistance to fellow veterans.
When the sun was sufficiently set and the dark sky was a suitable backdrop, the annual fireworks display and drone show lit up the area with bursts of color, unique patterns and recognizable designs.
