Volunteers remove firework tied to goose in Baldwin park

An unknown person or persons duct-taped fireworks to the chest of a Canada Goose at Silver Lake Park in Baldwin last month.

Photos of the goose circulated on Facebook, and a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, volunteer removed the firework, according to photos shared online. The goose was seemingly unharmed.

“The explosive appeared to have been lit but was soaked in water, presumably when the cowardly perpetrator let go and the bird wisely escaped into the water,” representatives of Long Island Orchestrating for Nature, or LION, wrote on Facebook on July 31.

Long Island Orchestrating for Nature and PETA are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction on cruelty charges of the person or persons who committed the “horrific” act.

To donate to the reward fund, visit Long Island Orchestrating for Nature on Facebook. If it remains unclaimed, the funds will be redirected to LION’s mission of helping animals on Long Island and beyond, representatives said.

The goose was released back into the wild about a week ago a few hours after the rescue, LION representatives said on Facebook, after a veterinarian gave the OK.
