Blasted by the snow, again

Yet another storm has reminded us that northeast winters can be brutal. This latest blast began Thursday afternoon in Nassau as rain, then heavy rain, and then as temperatures fell, morphed into snowflakes. Inch-by-stormy-inch, the snow piled up overnight to near a foot or so in western Nassau to somewhat less in mid- and eastern parts of the county.

Just as most of the snow from the last storm had melted, a winter storm moved across Long Island Thursday night and into Friday, dumping about a foot of new snow.

Snow began on the South Shore Thursday afternoon and continued through Friday, closing all schools in the area.

Recovering from the storm

Thursday was dig-out day throughout the South Shore after a near-blizzard smacked the area from late Tuesday through early Thursday morning. Almost a foot and a half of heavy, wet snow pressed down on roofs, cars, streets and parks, closing schools for most students and bringing shoveling chores to most adults.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence W. Mulvey has announced that for the thirty one hour period from 12:01 a.m. Feb. 10, through 7 a.m. Feb. 11, there were 190 auto accidents in the Nassau County. Of those, 34 resulted in injuries.

Lynbrook's the place for holiday fun

The Lynbrook Winter Celebration was full of fun, with a petting zoo, lively dancers, carolling, a tree lighting, and a visit from Santa.
Local merchants stayed open sell their wares and serve sweet treats and hot chocolate to the chilly crowd.

Santa Claus comes to Lynbrook

Santa Claus took time out from his very busy schedule to make a special visit to Lynbrook families at the Earle Avenue parking lot. Before he said goodbye, he left the children with an early Christmas gift — a movie at the Lynbrook Movie Theater. Ho, ho, ho!
