Hundreds of friends and family attended the Timothy J. Motherway Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser held last Saturday at the Commuters Club on Ocean Avenue in East Rockaway. The funds raised at this second annual event will go to a graduating student at East Rockaway High School — Motherway’s alma mater. more

And with election season in full swing, McCarthy will face Republican Primary Winner Francis X. Becker, Nassau County legislator for the 6th legislative district, in the 4th Congressional District race in November’s national election. But first, here is a breakdown on what McCarthy told the Herald about her issues and views on the road to trying to achieve re-election.Carolyn McCarthy, 66, is currently serving her 7th term in the U.S. Congress as a representative of 4th Congressional District. The district includes Baldwin, East Meadow, East Rockaway, Elmont, the Five Towns, Lynbrook, Floral Park, Franklin Square, Garden City, Hempstead, Malverne, Mineola, Carle Place, New Hyde Park, Oceanside, Rockville Centre, Roosevelt, Uniondale, Valley Stream, West Hempstead, and Westbury. She is widowed and lives in Mineola. more
The Nassau County Robbery Squad is investigating a bank robbery that took place last Friday at 8:55 a.m. at Astoria Federal Savings Bank in East Rockaway. According to detectives, two men, one armed with a black automatic pistol, entered the bank, at 464 Atlantic Ave. One man held bank personnel at gunpoint while another vaulted the counter and removed currency from three teller stations. After demanding access to the bank vault, which he was told employees could not open, the second man forced a teller to open the ATM safe, where he removed more money. The suspeects then fled in an unknown direction. more
The Freedom Party of East Rockaway held its first organizational meeting on Sept. 23 at the Commuter’s Club on Ocean Avenue in East Rockaway. The 19 attendees were welcomed by Richard Meagher, current deputy mayor of the village, and Village Trustee Irene Villacci. Meagher served as moderator for the evening and, after reviewing six different handouts, including proposed bylaws, he outlined four reasons for forming the Freedom Party of East Rockaway. more
