Nearly 25 years have passed since Colin Ferguson stepped onto a Long Island Rail Road train in Mineola and started indiscriminately firing a 9mm pistol at passengers. Six were killed and 19 wounded. Kevin McCarthy, then 26 and a broker with Prudential Securities in New York City, took a bullet to the head, but he survived. His left arm remains partially paralyzed.

Once upon a time, holiday shopping was an experience. Folks carved out entire Saturdays or Sundays and headed to their local downtowns to browse through the retail shops. The experience was fun and quaint. You had lunch at the local diner. Then along came the malls.
